Red Wings' youngsters nipped by defending Stanley Cup champ Chicago

The youngsters who had been so successful under Jeff Blashill from the minor leagues the final couple of seasons brought their act on the National Hockey League Tuesday.

Blashill would have to be pleased with what he saw from the the third period.

In Blashill's debut because Red Wings head coach, Detroit fielded a lineup that featured no less than nine players that are penciled into start the growing season in Grand Rapids, where many of which helped the Griffins win the 2013 Calder Cup.

The Red Wings sat all their top players while dressing a number of regulars.

Meanwhile, the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks a lineup that included top players Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane and Brent Seabrook.

Yet the Red Wings rallied from your three-goal deficit inside final 14:02 of regulation to make overtime before Trevor Daley's goal 1:40 to the 3-on-3 extra session gave the Blackhawks a 5-4 victory in the United Center.

It was the preseason opener for both teams.

Anthony Mantha, Riley Sheahan and Teemu Pulkkinen scored for that Red Wings inside the third as soon as they fell behind 4-1.

Mantha, the Red Wings first-round pick in 2013, started the comeback when he one-timed a pass from Andy Miele from the high slot at 5:58. Pulkkinen pulled the Red Wings within 4-3 with 7:07 left and Luke Glendening tied it on the power enjoy 2:05 remaining.

Jimmy Howard began in goal with the Red Wings generating 18 saves before being replaced by Tom McCollum with 10:07 left inside the second period plus the Red Wings trailing 3-0.

The first period was freewheeling because the teams combined for 31 shots, 16 by Chicago.

The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead after twenty or so minutes on goals by rookie Kyle Baun and Toews. Baun put back a rebound at 7:16 and Toews fired a wrist shot on the high slot past Howard 68 seconds later.

The Red Wings experienced a good opportunity late inside period with 3:36 of consecutive power-play time, including 24 seconds of 5-on-3. But Scott Darling kept them away from the board.

The Blackhawks managed to make it 3-0 when Teuvo Teravainen converted a rebound from your bottom in the right faceoff circle with a power play at 6:24. Chicago had all four power plays inside period.

Ryan Garbutt managed to make it 4-1 at 2:39 of your third period.

The Red Wings outshot the Blackhawks 38-37, including 10-4 inside third period. Detroit was 1-for-3 for the power play and Chicago was 1-for-4.

The teams meet again Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena.
