FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Damon Harrison has created his presence felt about the New York Jets' defense, working his way from as an undrafted free agent beyond William Penn in 2012 to some starting NFL nose tackle.
Although the 26-year-old Harrison has built himself jointly the league's best at his position, he's sometimes overshadowed with a line which includes Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams — all first-round draft picks. The 6-foot-4, 350-pound Harrison is amongst the Jets' most confident and colorful characters, the other of their most critical — or else underrated — players.
Get to learn a little more about the person nicknamed "Snacks" prior to a Jets accept Andrew Luck along with the Colts in Indianapolis on Monday night:
PATH FROM UNDRAFTED TO NFL STARTER: "It was pretty rough, man. Every day, would you know if today will be the day they'll contact you and ask to the playbook. It's nerve-racking. I knew I'd play football after college, but I didn't think the NFL. It just gave the look of too big a rise to go from (NAIA-level) William Penn for the NFL."
GROWING UP IN NEW IBERIA, LOUISIANA: "I were raised in the projects plus it was your typical neighborhood with a bit of bit of everything, some positive stuff and lots of negative. I may not be who I am today in any other case for that area knowning that environment."
PLAYED SHOOTING GUARD IN BASKETBALL AT LAKE CHARLES BOSTON ACADEMY: "I would have been a pure shooter, man."
BUT INJURED KNEE AS A JUNIOR: "Yeah, and I gained about 50 pounds and chose to play football."
STILL HAVE THAT SHOT, THOUGH?: "Yes, sir! I mean, I have to copy a little more now because I'm a lot stronger, however, you just never lose that form."
WENT TO NORTHWEST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUT DIDN'T PLAY FOOTBALL: "The coaches convinced me to sign a release form stating that I was likely to pretty much waste per year of eligibility because I wasn't gonna play. Once I signed the production form, they couldn't honor my scholarship anymore."
WORKED OVERNIGHTS STOCKING SHELVES AT WALMART IN LOUISIANA: "I only agreed to be trying to find something to complete to make some cash. I started off from the pets department and take care of in cosmetics. The first night, they explain to you to not stock the lower shelf if you are sitting about the floor. I found out tough way and fell asleep within the middle from the aisle."
ENDED UP PLAYING FOOTBALL AT WILLIAM PENN IN OSKALOOSA, IOWA: "It would have been a culture shock beyond this world, man. I had not witnessed snow before during my life. I don't think I had lots of people colder than maybe 45 or 50 degrees. The second day, it had been like minus-2 and I had no shoes, only sandals. I kept wiping the snow off my jacket. I didn't realize that if you give it time to sit there, it'll just disappear."
CONSIDER YOURSELF UNDERRATED?: "I wouldn't use that word, but I can realize why other people do because I'm not family members name like Muhammad, Sheldon and Leonard are. The people who watch football specifically what I do.
PRO BOWL ASPIRATIONS?: "I have championship aspirations. If that were to happen, I may not be able to play from the Pro Bowl, so hopefully I don't be able to play inside Pro Bowl soon."
BEST NOSE TACKLE IN THE NFL IS ... ?: "Myself. I don't point out that as a knock to anybody else. I just know myself and what I bring towards the table. I don't believe anybody inside the NFL, when you finally look at the description of an nose tackle, would it better."
EMBRACED "SNACKS" NICKNAME?: "I wasn't too attached to it since it started off here like a joke (as a consequence of his penchant for sweets) also it stuck, but I pointed out that as long as they were calling me something, I was still inside the building."
HOBBIES: "Playing Madden, Call of Duty, NBA2K, dominoes and Spider Solitaire."
FAVORITE MUSIC/ARTIST: "R&B and Luther Vandross."
FAVORITE TV SHOW: "'Martin.' You can always trust me for a good laugh and frequently there's some real-world stuff thrown with it."
FAVORITE MOVIE: "'The Five Heartbeats' is No. 1. Oh, and 'Rise with the Planet on the Apes.' As a collective unit about the defensive line, that's your movie. We watch it each time we go to your hotel, and that we act out scenes everyday. Muhammad is Koba and Quinton (Coples) is Caesar, but I didn't have a name yet."
FAVORITE FOOD: "Crawfish and shrimp fettucine."
PREGAME SUPERSTITION: "I consume the same meal, wake at the same time and have fun playing the same pair of songs when I get to your stadium."
IF I WASN'T PLAYING FOOTBALL, I WOULD BE ... : "Playing within the NBA. I'd likely to end up a short shooting guard, but I'd be within the NBA, and I'm very confident in praoclaiming that."
